Why Chelsea swapping Michy Batshuayi for Fernando Llorente in January transfer window

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is reportedly keen on a shock swoop for Swansea striker Fernando Llorente.

The Italian wants to bolster the Blues' firepower as he looks to win the Premier League title at the first time of asking.

The Spaniard played for Conte at Juventus and a sensational swap deal with £33million summer signing Michy Batshuayi has been mooted.

But should Chelsea really sign the 31-year-old? Oliver Harbord , from the new website Football.London , has his say on the matter - and chiefly, why it doesn't quite add up...

One of the strangest transfer rumours doing the rounds this month has been Chelsea’s potential swoop for Swansea City striker Fernando Llorente .

However, according to sources this is more than just a rumour - it appears the proposed move may be progressing further and getting ever closer.

Moving for the Spaniard seems like a bizarre deal, with the Blues' £33m summer signing Michy Batshuayi rumoured to be headng in the other direction on loan.

According to Sky Sports' Guillem Balague, Conte "for" sure wants to sign Llorente this month.
At the age of 31, Llorente is hardly pulling up any trees at the struggling Swans, with six goals so far this season since joining from Sevilla and no guarantee of starts for the Welsh side.

Any transfer rumours put towards Chelsea boss Antonio Conte have been immediately swatted back.
When asked about the Llorente move, Conte said: "I repeat always in the same, in this period - I don't like to talk about players of the other teams because it is not respectful to the player and for the team."

But should this deal really be on the table? Is it a deal worthy of the potential Premier League champions?

Whether it is Batshuayi or Llorente, they are going to be playing second fiddle to Diego Costa, no doubt about it, but there may come the time when one of them will have to step up.

It is hard to say whether Batshuayi is ready to fit into Costa’s boots as the Belgian’s longest outing in the Premier League so far has been just 19 minutes.

But is Llorente the answer? It seems like an odd fit and doesn’t feel that he is the player that can lead the line to Premier League glory.

Obviously Conte sees something in the Spaniard, and Llorente certainly does have previous in winning titles with Juventus and Sevilla.

But it would be an underwhelming signing from the fans’ point of view, who would expect a top player to be there as a backup for Costa.

January is always a difficult month to buy massive stars, with clubs unwilling to let their biggest names go halfway through the season.

But signing Llorente would obviously show that Conte has little faith in Batshuayi at the moment when the crunch time comes. Although I am not sure that I would have much faith in Llorente to get the job done also.
